How the essay editor works

  1. Step 1

    Paste and check

Drop your text into the editor and press Check. Results come back in a couple of seconds.

  2. Step 2

    Hover any underline

Every issue is underlined where it sits. Hover it to see the suggested fix and why it is wrong.

  3. Step 3

    Accept what you want

Click a suggestion to apply it, or use Correct all to take every fix in one go.

What it catches

Every mark that trips people up, plus the spelling and capitalization errors that ride along with them.

Commas

One comma changes the whole sentence. "Ma’am your order is ready" becomes "Ma’am, your order is ready." We catch the missing ones and remove the ones that break the rhythm.

Periods

A sentence that never ends is a sentence nobody finishes reading. We flag fused clauses and show you where the full stop belongs.

Apostrophes

Settle the its/it’s question for good. Contractions, possessives and plural nouns all get checked against the rule, not against habit.

Hyphens and dashes

Compound words need to read as one unit. We keep "self-driving car" hyphenated and stop en dashes standing in for hyphens.

Question marks

A question dressed as a statement confuses the reader. "Wheres your phone." becomes "Where’s your phone?" with both problems fixed.

Colons and semicolons

Two marks, two jobs. Colons introduce, semicolons join. We check that each one is doing the work it was chosen for.

Quotation marks

Dialogue and quoted material follow strict conventions. We check the pairing, the nesting and where the surrounding punctuation sits.

Spelling

Typos slip past every proofread. "Beleive" becomes "believe" and "definately" becomes "definitely", spelled for whichever English you picked.

Why writers use it

It costs nothing

No account, no trial, no credit card. Paste your text and check it as often as you need.

Six varieties of English

Write "color" or "colour" and have it come back right. Pick American, British, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand or South African before you check.

You stay in control

Nothing changes until you say so. Hover any underline to see the fix, accept the ones you want, ignore the rest.

Your text stays yours

No account, so nothing is attached to you. Your writing is checked and discarded on our side, and your recent checks are saved only in your own browser, where you can clear them any time.

Who it is for

Students

Essays, term papers and theses get marked down for mechanics before anyone argues with your ideas. Clear those errors first.

Professionals

A misplaced comma in a client email undercuts everything above it. Check anything going out with your name attached.

Writers and editors

Catch the errors your own eye slides over after the fourth read of the same paragraph.

People writing in a second language

English punctuation follows rules that are rarely taught directly. Each suggestion explains what changed and why.

Frequently asked questions

Can it check a whole essay at once?
Up to 5,000 characters per check, around 800 words. For a longer essay, paste it a section at a time.
Will my tutor be able to tell I used it?
Check corrects mechanics only. It does not write anything for you and does not change your argument or your voice, so what you submit is still your own writing.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no account to create, no trial to start and no paywall after a certain number of checks. You can check up to 5,000 characters at a time, as often as you like.
Do you store the text I paste in?
Not on our servers. Your document is checked, the suggestions come back, and it is discarded. Two things do persist: your last few checks are saved in your own browser so the History button works and your text is still there when you return, and we may cache the list of corrections for seven days against a one-way hash so repeat checks are instant. The browser history never leaves your device and you can wipe it with Clear all history. Nothing is used to train any model.
Which version of English does it use?
Whichever you choose. Pick American, British, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand or South African English from the dropdown above the editor before you check, and spelling and punctuation conventions follow that choice.
Do I have to accept every suggestion?
No. Each underline is a separate suggestion. Hover it, read what changed, then accept or ignore it. Correct all applies everything at once if you would rather not review them individually.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in your browser on any device. There is nothing to download and no extension to add.
